The Summer Solstice and the first day of summer is on June 21st this year. The day of the solstice marks the longest of the year and this year is extra special with a full moon occurring that night. What better way to celebrate the cosmos than with a wine festival! The 5th Annual Virginia Summer Solstice Wine Festival is being held June 22nd and 23rd this year at the Lazy Days Winery in Amherst, Virginia; just over 20 miles from Lynchburg off US-29N.
Lazy Days Winery began planting grapes in 2007 and bottles its own wines. It sits among three acres including a large green lawn and winery. The winery is family friendly and visitors can picnic on the rolling hills there, overlooking the Blue Ridge Mountains. The winery is open Wednesday through Sunday from 11am to 5pm. The wines available include Petit Verdot (described as “dark and fruity with hints of raisins and currants”), Sweet Lazy Days (“a nice blend of Vidal and Chardonnay”), Viognier (with an aroma “like apricots mixed with orange blossoms or acacia”), and Merlot (“gentle, soft earthy tannins”). Bottles range in price from $16 to $20 per bottle.
The Summer Solstice Wine Festival is a family friendly event which will include live music, food, local arts and crafts, and of course Virginia wines! Add in a petting zoo, inflatable bouncers, and an antique car show and you have one unique festival. The festival will run from 11am to 7pm on the 22nd and 11am to 5pm on the 23rd. Wines from Lazy Days Winery and seven additional vineyards from around Virginia will be featured. Six bands will be playing over the course of the weekend, music starts at noon on Saturday and lasts until 6:30pm and will start at 12:30pm on Sunday and will run to 4:30pm. There are various ticket options: $30 for 2-day admission, $20 for admission with wine tasting, and $10 for just general admission. Children 12 and under are free. Tickets can be purchased in advance online (prices remain the same) or at the door.
This festival is the perfect way to welcome the summer to Central Virginia! Bring the whole family to enjoy the food, drink, and entertainment and as always you can stop by the Badge afterwards to continue the festivities and enjoy some live music on Saturday night. We would love to see you!
