Enjoy Hillcats Baseball This Summer

Take me out to the ballgame, take me out to the crowd! Baseball season has started and that means our local minor league team, the Lynchburg Hillcats, have begun playing and will be defending their 2012 championship title. Current standings have the Hillcats at six wins, five losses. This puts our local guys just one game back from first place in the Carolina League Northern. The season has just begun and with 129 games left, a lot can happen!

The Lynchburg Hillcats are a part of the Carolina League and are a Class ‘Advanced A’ team. The Carolina League was formed just as World War II was ending in 1945. It began with only two teams in southern Virginia. Today the Carolina League is made up of eight teams stretching from Delaware to South Carolina. The teams are split into two divisions, the Northern and Southern Divisions, with four teams in each. Over the past sixty-two years, the Hillcats have brought home seven titles including last year’s 2012 Mill Cup.

Since 2011, the Hillcats have been the farm team for the Atlanta Braves. In past years, the Hillcats have also served as a farm team for a number of other franchises such as the Cincinnati Reds, Pittsburgh Pirates, and the Boston Red Sox. The Braves have six other minor league affiliate teams they work with including the Rookie level Danville Braves out of Danville, Virginia. Through the years a number of All-Star players have played for Lynchburg, most notably: Darryl Strawberry, Dwight Gooden, Jose Bautista, and Billy Beane.

Located only 2.5 miles from the Hillcats home field, the Calvin Falwell Field, the Stoney Badger Tavern is a big supporter of our local team! The field opened in 1940 as the Lynchburg City Stadium and has been through many updates with the last in 2004. The stadium now has skyboxes, an updated press box, and picnic areas. Ticket prices remain very reasonable, General Admission tickets are $8 and the Badger often waves the cover for our live entertainment to those patrons who have ticket stubs from the game so you get two for one. The Hillcats have a stretch of home games beginning today, Thursday, April 18th and occurring everyday through Sunday, April 21st. If you attend a game at Calvin Falwell Field, check out the Stoney Badger Tavern sign on the scoreboard!
