Our favorite summer long festival is starting up again soon; Friday Cheers makes its debut this week on Friday, May 17th. Last years opening weekend brought out over 4,000 locals! Friday Cheers is “the party with a purpose” held every Friday beginning in May and continuing through July 19th. This event is held at Riverfront Festival Park on Jefferson Street in Lynchburg. Gates open at 5:30 and admission is $5 to those over 12 years of age (12 and under are free). All proceeds from each “party” go to revitalizing downtown Lynchburg.
Each week a different performer is featured at Friday Cheers for a total of ten different bands. Superhold is kicking off the season on the 17th. They specialize in eighties rock n’roll covers and were named one of the top wedding bands of the year by Virginia Living Magazine. You can also find all different kinds of music throughout the series: rock/dance (Dragonfly, May 24th; Out of Spite, June 21st), country (Seven Mile Ford, May 31st), motown (Ken Knox & Company, June 7th), bluegrass (Chamomile & Whiskey, June 14th), r&b/funk (Signature Soundz, June 28th; The House Band, July 19th), top 40 (The Worx, July 5th), and groove (The Ruckus, July 12th).
No festival is complete without some good food and drink. Last years eats included hot dogs, funnel cakes, and chicken sticks to name a few and with the event sponsored by Bud Light, there are sure to be some refreshing beverages. A few good things to know before heading down to enjoy the good music that is benefitting the community: you are welcome to bring your own chairs and blankets but outside food and drinks are not allowed. Pets also need to stay home. A valid identification is need to enter and those 21 and over will get a wristband. For those under the age of eighteen, you will need to be accompanied by a guardian. Finally, any bag is subject to search.
Friday Cheers has been around since 1992 and this year is sure to be great! Be sure to check it out and support the revitalization of the great city of Lynchburg and when the show is over continue supporting your community by coming on down to the Stoney Badger. We have live music every Friday so you can keep the party going! Hot Like Cajun, a jam rock band playing both original music and covers, will be playing at the Badger on the 17th beginning at 9pm so there is plenty of time to catch the show. See you there!
