Lynchburg’s Beauty in Art

If you are looking for something different to do this summer when the kids are out of school, check out The Academy of Fine Arts located on Main Street in downtown Lynchburg in the historic Academy of Music Theatre. The gallery is open Monday through Friday from 9am to 5pm and Saturday’s from 10am to 5pm. Special events, shows and classes are also available. The Academy of Fine Arts has something for everyone; its mission is to inspire, engage, and educate.

The Academy has two separate galleries, The Ann White Academy Gallery, which can be found in the main building on Main Street and Art Up Front which is located in The Arts and Education building at the corner of Commerce and 5th Streets. Two photography exhibits are currently being featured at the Ann White Academy Gallery, “Roaming Plan: iPhone Wanderings” by Sam Krisch and an unnamed collection from Larry Contratti. Oil paintings by Russ Voelker and museum member artist installations can be seen at Art Up Front.

If you would prefer to participate in creating art rather than viewing it, numerous classes are also being offered. Adults can take painting/drawing/printmaking, pottery, glass, jewelry, and photography courses and various art camps and kindermusik are available for children (all ages). More information on all the classes can be found on the Academy of Fine Arts website.

The 2012-2013 performance schedule just wrapped up in May with six performances of Legally Blonde The Musical. The Academy has yet to announce its new line-up for 2013-2014 but its sure to be great. Last seasons shows included plays, comedians, and musical acts. Yelp reviews by patrons of The Academy performances are all positive, calling them “top notch.”

Various special events are also put on by the The Academy. One of their year round events include First Fridays at the Academy. Patrons can enjoy live music and hors d’oeurves while checking out the art on display from 5pm to 8pm the first Friday of every month. The event is held at both The Ann White Academy Gallery and Art Up Front. For families, there is Free Family Art Saturdays, generally offered once a month. A family class is held in the afternoon and the gallery is open 10-5.

There is truly something for everyone to enjoy at The Academy of Fine Arts; art, music, theatre. It is a center for culture and education right here in Lynchburg, sure to be worth the trip!
